Copy Editor

Penn State Press seeks an experienced Copy Editor to edit 12 to 15 scholarly book-length manuscripts per year, preparing the manuscript for design and composition and working with the production coordinator to review proofs. Oversee the editing of freelancers in collaboration with the managing editor.

Ensure that all manuscript components (text, tables, footnotes, reference lists, appendixes, tables, and illustration captions) are edited to highest publishing standards. Establish and maintain manuscript editing schedules and serve as liaison with authors and freelancers during editing stages. Edit and proofread catalogue and jacket copy and jacket/cover mechanicals.

A thorough command of grammar, spelling, punctuation, and syntax and a keen eye for detail are essential. Must possess excellent communication skills and judgment and be able to juggle priorities and work efficiently under pressure. Requires Bachelor’s degree or equivalent, preferably in English and the humanities, plus one year of work-related experience in scholarly publishing.

Knowledge of one or more languages is desirable; M.A. is a plus. Finalists will be asked to undergo an assessment of editing skills. Must be proficient with onscreen editing techniques in Microsoft Word and have extensive knowledge of the Chicago Manual of Style, as well as be familiar with production procedures and the basics of bookmaking.
