Kasargod District

A district with rare and different beauty, Kasaragod is poised for growth in the area of tourism. Kasaragod , known as the land of Gods, forts, rivers, hills and beautiful beaches is the most enchanting district of Kerala.
Kasargod is a land with resonant past, myths and legends. The fort at Bekal is the largest and best preserved in the State. Kasargod is acquiring prominence in the tourist map of India as 'The land of Yakshagana and Theyyam'. Kasaragod is also the cradle of many colourful art forms and folk music of Kerala. Kasaragod displays a variety of patterns and styles in temple architecture like Madhur Mahaganapathy Temple, Malik Deenar the Great Juma Masjid etc which speaks volumes about the rich cultural heritage of the region. The rich pageant of 'Theyyam's impersonated, rises Kasaragod into a land of fabulous fantasies.
The twelve rivers flowing across its terrain, makes Kasaragod an enchanting beauty of Nature's creation.
Physiography Lying in the northern tip of Kerala, bounded by the Western Ghats in the east, Arabian Sea in the west,Karnataka State in the north and Kannur District in the south, the district is blessed with water, forest and mineral resources. Demarcating the North and the South are two rivers- the Talapadi and the Trikaripur. Crey rocks and barren land are present amidst the dense vegetation . Calm lagoons are also visible through the coconut palms along the coastal belt. -Population: 1,070,629 Altitude: Sea Level -Famous for : Coir and Handloom -Best Season: August to March
Legend :-There are different views on the derivation of the name "KASARAGOD". One view is that it is the combination of two Sanskrit words kaasaara (which means lake or pond) and kroda (which means a place where treasure is kept). Another view is that it is the place where Kaasaraka trees (Strychnos nux vomica or Kaanjiram or Kaaraskara) are in abundance. Both views are relavant as there are large number of rivers, lakes and ponds in the coastal belt of the district besides thick flora consisting of innumerable varieties of trees, shrubs etc. particularly plentitude of Kaasaraka trees.
Demography :-Geographical Area - 1992 Sq.Kms Taluks - Kasargod, Hosdurg Revenue Villages - 75 Nos. Municipalities - Kasargod, Kanhangad Panchayaths - 39 Nos. Blocks - Manjeshwar, Kasargod, Kanhangad, & Nileshwar.
Climate :-warm, humid(high) and tropical.
